Lets Talk Mental Health 🤍

May is recognized as Mental Health Month in the United States to raise awareness about mental health and encourage people to prioritize their mental well-being. Studies show that the black community faces unique challenges in accessing mental health care, resulting in higher rates of untreated mental illness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, black adults in the U.S. are more likely than white adults to report persistent symptoms of emotional distress, yet less likely to receive mental health treatment. Additionally, suicide rates among black youth are increasing at a faster rate than any other racial/ethnic group. It is important to address these disparities and increase access to culturally competent mental health services. Here are 5 resources that can be used to increase healthy emotional health:

  1. Counseling or therapy - speaking to a mental health professional can provide guidance and support in managing emotions and improving emotional health.

  2. Mindfulness meditation - practicing mindfulness can help increase emotional awareness and regulation, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being.

  3. Physical exercise - regular exercise has been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety and depression, and increase overall emotional well-being.

  4. Social support - building and maintaining healthy relationships with family, friends, or a support group can provide a sense of connection and reduce feelings of isolation.

  5. Self-care activities - engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as taking a bath, reading a book, or getting a massage, can help reduce stress and improve emotional health.

Here are some websites you can utilize for online therapy: BetterHelp, Talkspace, Amwell, 7 Cups, and Regain. It's important to note that some of these services may require payment, so it's best to research and compare before making a decision. Some websites that can help you find an in-person therapist near you include:

Psychology Today, GoodTherapy, and TherapyDen. Your mental and emotional health is just as important as your physical health! Mental and emotional health are essential components of overall well-being. Taking care of your mental and emotional health can help manage stress, increase resilience, improve relationships, and enhance overall quality of life. It's important to prioritize self-care activities that promote mental and emotional well-being, such as practicing mindfulness, seeking support from loved ones, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. Happy May!
